Class 1A Feature Athlete (Nov. 1)

Name: Sabrina Skukalek
High School: O.L. Sacred Heart
Grade: 11
Position: Setter

Background Info: A setter/opposite the last two seasons, Skukalek entered the quarterfinals this year as the sole setter for the OLSH Chargers. While she has plenty of experience as the starter the last two years, her playoff run was cut short by a car accident last season before the Chargers took on the Ft. Cherry Rangers. The Chargers won the first two sets, but then lost the next three to end their season. Having to make two different adjustments in the line up to try to compensate for the loss of Skukalek was a little too much to overcome. Needless to say, coach McDonald is more than happy to see a healthy Skukalek in the line up for the playoffs this season! The Chargers will play Tuesday vs a very good Geibel squad at Baldwin at 7:30 pm.

Quotes from OLSH coach Mike McDonald: "Sabrine's strength is her clean touch on her delivery of the ball, and her ability to save balls that are tight to the net. She also brings energy to the team from an emotional standpoint." McDonald thinks she in only scratching the surface of what she can become as a setter, still working on her blocking as well as her ability to attack the second ball when she is in the front row. Currently, she is one of the top servers on the team, gaining points with a lively floater that gives her opponents trouble. "Sabrina is still improving as a setter and as a competitor. She is working on her ball placement and her in-game decision making skills, but clearly we are much better with her than we are without her. It will be nice to have Sabrina for all of the playoffs this season, instead of just the beginning of them. And she's a junior, so there's still room to raise her performance to an even higher level, which I am looking forward to seeing happen."
