2018 WPIAL Class 3A Section 1 Preview Capsules

Baldwin

Coach - Eric Falcione (18th season)

Returning Starters:
6-2 senior outside hitter Ben Remlinger
6-1 senior setter Dante Parente
6-5 senior middle hitter Mike Goga
5-11 sophomore outside hitter/defensive specialist Ted Boehm

Season Outlook:
This season we have higher expectations due to the fact that we have several players that have been varsity starters for the past three seasons. These members include: Setter Dante Parente, outside hitter Ben Remlinger, and middle hitter Mike Goga. Parente and Remlinger have been on the varsity since their freshman year. Both have the experience, savy, and leadership to help the team win. Goga just finished an all star season playing basketball. All three should be top level players at their positions. We are hoping to put together a very strong season.

Section Favorite:
Bethel Park is the favorite until someone knocks them off.

Bethel Park

Coach: Zach Smith (2nd year)

Returning Starters:
5-8 sophomore defensive specialist Tony Boff
6-0 junior outside hitter Max Cooley

Season Outlook:
My team is very young this year so it is still a question mark how we're going to do but we hope to be competitive by the end of the season.

Section Favorite:
Baldwin and Canon McMillan are probably the favorites

WPIAL Favorite:
North Allegheny has to be the favorite

6-2 Ben Fuller
6-3 Matt Gregos
6-1 Mason Bender
6-3 Neil Staehle

Section Favorite:
Upper St. Clair

WPIAL Favorite:
North Allegheny

Young Players to Watch:
Damon Slencak

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Peters Township

Coach: Nathan Swauger (2nd year)

Returning Starters:
None.

Season Outlook:
Compete for a playoff spot in Section 1.

Section Favorite:
Bethel Park

WPIAL Favorite:
North Allegheny

Young Players to Watch:
The sophomore libero from Bethel Park.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Upper St. Clair

Coach: Josh Ficorilli (5th year)

Returning Starters:
6-4 senior middle hitter Matt White
5-10 senior setter Taim Aizooky

Season Outlook:
We are lacking a little depth and varsity playing experience. Having had a large graduating class last season, it limited play-time for this group of players. But, that makes this group and eager bunch, willing to be coached and learn.

Section Favorite:
Bethel Park is the reigning champ, so I assume they'd be favored again.

WPIAL Favorite:
North Allegheny always the WPIAL favorite? So, as long as they still have a volleyball team, it's them.

Young Players to Watch:
We have a sophomore outside hitter R.J. White who will be highly impactful for us. I think before too long he will see a little recognition in the section.
