Name: Derek Wassel High School: Montour Grade: 11 Position: Middle/Right Hitter Background Info: This is Wassel's first season as a starter and second with the varsity. He was recognized on the second team of the Section 1-AA All-Star Team this year. He is also a member of Montour's track team. On top of having reach that could block out the sun, the versatility to move from position to position (even front row to back), and an attitude that lifts his team when they're down or carries them through celebration, he has respect for others and a work ethic any coach should envy. I often arrive to practice early only to find he has already warmed up and started working on new routes. After Montour bade a varsity team made almost entirely of seniors farewell, Derek didn't miss a beat transitioning to full varsity play and quickly became the cornerstone of our block.
