Class 2A Feature Athlete (April 20)

Name: Colin Wiegand
High School: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart
Grade: 12
Position: Outside Hitter

Background Info: Wiegand is a four-year starter for OLSH, the first two years as a middle hitter, then moved to the outside at the beginning of last year. He was voted to the first team of the Class 2A Section 1 All-Star Team and was a second-team selection on the WPIAL All-Star Team.

Quotes from OLSH coach Mike McDonald: "Colin's importance to the team is not taken for granted by us. Early in his career, he filled a need for us and did not have to carry our team in that role. We had experienced players in main roles for us and we leaned on them exclusively during that time, so there was not a lot of pressure on Colin to be a main contributor. Last year, Colin began his role in the same position but after the first 2 matches, we made a move that allowed us to utilize his passing talents as well as his hitting talents. We need our best players to touch the ball twice in the same play and he does that fcr us quite well. His serve receive abilities are very useful and important for our success, and that skill is very often overlooked for the flashier, big hit or block. Colin is a good server, and has a good all around game that gives great value to our team. Without him, I think we would struggle to have the current success that we are experiencing, and that's not a slap to any of our other players, but just a compliment to him and what he brings to our team. He enjoys the game, has put the work in during the club seasons and would like to continue his career after high school. I hope other coaches see his value as well when it comes to the end of the season accolades, but for Colin the only thing he truly cares about is winning. The other things will take care of themselves if our team is successful".
